a different way to help you slow down.

We created The Sauna as another way to experience Whitehill Steading - slowly. Heated by a wood-burning stove and looking out across the fields towards Hume Castle, it’s a place to get properly warm, cool down in the Borders air, take the plunge if you fancy it, and repeat.

Some people come for the heat. Some love the cold. Others discover that their favourite part is simply sitting outside between rounds, drinking water, talking, and doing very little.

There’s no right way to sauna here, and no experience required.

an hour that is entirely yours...

Arrive. Get changed. Step into the heat. Hear the stove. Throw water on the stones. Sit and talk, or don't. Step outside when you're ready. Cold shower, plunge, or just fresh air. Wrap up. Have some cold water or hot tea. Look across the fields. Go back in.

how to sauna

heat up

Step inside, find a comfortable spot, and let the wood-fired heat do its thing. Add water to the hot stones for a burst of löyly - the wave of steam that briefly intensifies the heat - then sit back and enjoy it.

Most people spend around 10–15 minutes inside at a time, but there’s no target to hit. Stay for as long as feels comfortable, and step outside whenever your body tells you it’s time.

cool down

Step back into the fresh Borders air and give yourself time to cool down.

Take a cold shower, lower yourself into the plunge, or simply sit outside for a while - the cold is an invitation, not a challenge.

If you do take the plunge, start gently. A short dip is plenty, especially if you’re new to cold water. There are no prizes for staying in longer.

refresh

Wrap up, take a seat, and enjoy the bit between the hot and the cold.

We provide fresh filtered water and hot tea, so take some time to rehydrate, enjoy the view across the fields, talk, or simply sit quietly.

Don’t rush back in. The pause is part of the experience.

Repeat.

When you feel ready, head back into the heat and begin again. Most people enjoy two or three rounds during a session, but there’s no prescribed formula.

Heat. Cold. Rest. Repeat as much - or as little - as feels good. Sauna at Whitehill isn’t about endurance or doing it ‘properly’. It’s about slowing down, listening to your body, and enjoying the ritual.

why sauna?

switch off

Leave your phone behind and give yourself an hour without notifications, scrolling, or somewhere else you need to be. In the heat, there really isn’t very much to do - and that’s rather the point.

feel the contrast

There’s something wonderfully invigorating about moving from deep heat into fresh Borders air or cold water, then feeling the warmth slowly return. Hot, cold, rest - simple sensations that bring you very much into the moment.

connect

Sauna is naturally social. Without phones or other distractions, conversations have room to unfold - whether you come with someone you know or find yourself chatting to someone new in a public session. Silence is equally welcome.

slow down

Sauna creates its own rhythm: warm up, cool down, sit for a while, then go back in when you’re ready. For an hour, you get to move at the speed of the fire rather than the speed of everything else.
